Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd 2015

Last week, undefeated boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. broke his silence and told both the press and social media that the sport’s most-awaited match between him and Manny Pacquiao should happen next year on May 2, 2015.  In reply, Pacquiao stated that their fans had waited long enough and that it was time to give in to their demands.  Both fighters are in their 30s, Mayweather a year older than Pacquiao — both in excellent and impeccable condition.  Both camps have not minced words when it comes to telling the other guy off: Mayweather states, “I know that he is not on my level.” To this Pacquiao retorts, “He is at a dead end. He has nowhere to go but to fight me.” He then adds, “Most of his fights, if not all, induced us to sleep.”

As previous attempts to make the match a reality were futile, no solid evidence has surfaced yet that will ensure that this megafight will take place in the near future. Since 2009, fans have been clamoring for a match between these two elite fighters. Mayweather still has two fights left for him before he retires from the sport while Pacquiao had just come off a devastating unanimous decision win against Chris Alghieri.

Bob Arum says No-go to May 2nd 2015 bout

The dream bout seems to have encountered another twist along the way–the date itself. The second of May falls under the Mexican holiday of “Cinco de Mayo”, a celebration that commemorates the Mexican heroes of the revolution of 1862 against the French. According to Bob Arum, May 2nd is a date that is sacred to Mexicans and it will be disrespectful for them to feature a Main Event Title bout between foreigners. The May 2 date is actually already scheduled for Miguel Cotto vs Saul Canelo Alvarez.

Mayweather using Pacquiao as pawn, boxing analysts claim

Some boxing analysts believe that Floyd might just be using Pacquiao as a “pawn” to headline the “Cinco de Mayo” weekend. It is widely believed that only the biggest and most popular fighters go at it in the “Cinco de Mayo.” Using the name of Manny Pacquiao will enable Mayweather to bump off other fighters competing for the date. If the fight between Cotto and Alvarez pushes through, it will be the first time in six years that a Mayweather fight will be toppled over by a much bigger boxing spectacle.

A number of boxing analysts also do not believe that Mayweather is serious in fighting Pacquiao, as agreeing to fight on a later date would actually lengthen promotion time. There is a big possibility that Mayweather might fight somebody else other than Pacquiao on May 2nd of next year. If both of them are victorious with their next fights, it is possible they may fight by September.   If it does push through, it could be the biggest money-making match in history, with the purse money for a possible Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight estimated at over $200 million.
