September 12, 2015 Jhonny Gonzalez vs Jonathan Oquendo at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

Jhonny Gonzalez and Jonathan Oquendo

The Puerto Rican Jonathan Oquendo obtained an important victory this Saturday defeating by unanimous decision the former two-time WBC Champion Jonny Gonzalez in an entertaining fight in which both were looking for a resurgence in their boxing careers.
Johnny and Oquendo debuted in the junior lightweight division and were the ones in charge of opening the PPV event in which Floyd Mayweather fought Andre Berto in the main event of the evening.

Oquendo went down in the first round, but then the Boricua leveled things up by sending the Mexican boxer to the ground in the next.
Oquendo’s 455 thrown punches in the whole battle were enough to convince the judges. One scored the fight
94-94, and the other two scored 95-93 and 98-90 to give Oquendo the win.
For many this was surprising, since Gonzalez threw 47 more punches with an effectiveness of 34 percent
against a 27 percent effectiveness of the Puerto Rican.

The first few minutes of the fight both fighters were analyzing each other, but then Jonathan began putting some pressure on the Mexican working his left hook. Flowever, Gonzalez landed a right upper in Oquendo’s chin that made him lose balance and he ended on his knees on the ground.
After the pause, Oquendo came out strong and landed a straight punch that sent the Mexican down and left him pretty hurt. The Referee determined that Jonny was able to continue, but when the bell rang, Gonzalez walked to the opposite corner showing how affected he was.
Oquendo pressured the next two rounds, but Gonzalez kept his distance trying to recover.

Gonzalez had good moments in the sixth and seventh rounds, but Oquendo dominated the ninth and started landing a lot of punches on the Mexican’s face, who was already bleeding profusely.
Oquendo entered the last round fighting with his opposite guard, but it didn’t turn out well. Both exchanged blows until the last minute, but the Puerto Rican took the worst part.
It was an exciting fight from beginning to end, and they both kept their promise of giving everything they had to entertain the crowd.
With this result, Oquendo improved his record to 26-4 leaving Gonzalez with one more loss and a record of 58 wins and 10 losses.
