Lucas Martin Matthysse vs Viktor Postol

“The fans can expect a great fight”; Declared Matthysse, who will be stepping onto the ring at the StubHub center for the second time in his career. “I am excited to be back in Carson”.

Favorite and Odds to Win

Viktor Postol will be fighting to defend his unblemished record but as things stand, hard-hitting Matthysse (37,3 34 KOs) enters the ring as favorite in Vegas and also among online sportbooks. However, Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) is not to be ruled out; the 31 year old Ukrainian National is known to be a sneaky practitioner of the sweet science who’s quite adept at nullifying his opponent’s strengths, and on Saturday he’ll be looking to impress at a grand stage.

Matthysse, a 33-year old Argentinian, is a reputed aggressive come-forward slugger with knockout potential in both hands, and he’s of course a fan favorite due to his characteristic high-action types of bouts. With perfect conditioning, (a little crazy-eyed), and a dependable beard, his fans are not worried: la La Maquina can take a beating and keep on chugging along.

Previous hard-earned victories against maulers such as Roberto Ortiz and Ruslan Provodnikov make Matthysse a worthy contender for the match: An 83% KO record supports this assertion. He has mauled eight of his last ten opponents.

Victor Postol is an intelligent boxer whose main advantage is the fact that he operates behind a tough defense and an educated, serpentine jab. He has great handspeed, excellent punch variety and uses his legs to put his opponent into position. This, however, does not deter Matthysse and he better be prepared to bring his best if he plans to remain undefeated this coming Saturday.

“Los Angles is a second home… it’s where my training camp is”, said Postol.

Prediction

This fiery matchup between the slugger and the spoiler has more people leaning towards the Argentine, but still, if you consider the difference in reach, which hasn’t been widely published, (Postol boasts five inches in height over his opponent, and he’s also a lanky fellow, so we can assume at least three inches more from armpit to fist) the former Ukrainian World Champion can box and jab his way to a very close decision.

The two fighters were ordered by the world boxing council to challenge each other for the WBC 140 pound title that has been vacant after Danny Garcia was stripped after failing to defend the title for over a year. Garcia has been sitting on the title while taking catch weight fights in the welterweight division.

The fight gives Lucas a better chance of clinching the title if he manages to deal with the reach, high work rate and the height of the 5’11 ’ Victor. Lucas recovering from a fierce 12 round fight against Ruslan Provodnokiv that he won with a majority decision win.

During the first six rounds of the match against Ruslan, Matthysse had the upper hand, but the Russian managed to stage a coup with an impressive come back during the second half of the match. Matthysse took a lot of punishment in this fight, so he has to be ready for another competitive fight if he wants to win this fight. This is rather difficult given that he has had only 5 months for a rest up and prepare for the next fight.

In the Postol fight, Matthysse will not have to worry about getting hit by the same shot he received from the Russian since Postol is not a heavy puncher. However, Postol throws a lot of punches hence making him difficult to hit.To win this fight, Matthysse will have to put on a lot of pressure on Postol to get him out of there.

On the other hand, Postol was not busy. He had all the time to rest and prepare since his last fight was in 2014, in which he beat Selcuk Aydin in an eleventh round knockout, on April this year, he managed to beat Jake Guiriceo on a 8 round decision win.
