Fight Highlights: Yi Ming down three times. WBA enforces the Three-Knockdown Rule
It didn’t take Randy Petalcorin more than one round to retain his WBA interim junior flyweight title at the Capital Gym in Beijing,China. His opponent, 34 year old Ma Yi Ming, could not keep the young up and coming fighter at bay to the disappointment of his own home fans. The fight marks the 23 year old Philippine’s first successful defense of his title which he beat Walter Tello to last year. The win has caused a sudden interests in the fighter from journalists and boxing fans a like. Such recognition could lead to his first televised fight in the near future.
Ma Yi Ming( 12-6, 7 K.O’s) was met by heavy blows from the first second of the fairly short bout. Randy had sent the Chinese to the canvas face-first within the first minute, his heavy and lightning quick blows proving to be too much for Ming who is 10 years his senior. It didn’t take much time after the compulsory eight count for Ming to get on one knee after Randy assaulted him. This was the second knock down within a minute and the crowd couldn’t help but laugh at their over matched fellow countryman. The referee could have stopped the fight at this point but Ming seemed determined to carry on. As soon as he got up it was clear that the Philippines heavy left jabs had already rendered him powerless. The fight should have ideally ended here.
Randy sensed that the end was near and continued relentlessly pounding away at his powerless opponent . The blows proved to be very effective and after the Chinese went down a third time, the referee ended the bout with Randy having knocked out his opponent in 1.43 minutes. This stretches Petalcorin’s unbeaten run to five straight years and two back to back wins in the Chinese city. His team was on hand to congratulate the young man to the crowds applause. It is not to be forgotten that the embattled Ming had come into the fight on a nine-game winning streak of his own.
Randy Petalcorin seems to be the new hit man in Philippine boxing, closely following in the footsteps of the great Manny Pacquiao. He is finally receiving the recognition he deserves. According to his promoter, Jim Claude Manangquil, Petalcorin is to face either WBA titleholder Ryoichi Tagushi (21-2-1, 8KOs) or WBC holder Pedro Guevara ( 25-1-1,17 KOs). We are certainly looking forward to the young mans next bout. His style and aggression would obviously make for an amazing fight with Pedro Guevara who is another knock out king.
