Lucas Martin Matthysse vs Viktor Postol

From the initial weigh-in up to the seventh round, Lucas Martin Mattysse appeared to hold the edge over Viktor Postol; However, Postol made an amazing recovery and survived long enough to deliver the fight ending blow to Matthyse’s eye.

Statistically in Lucas Martin Matthysse vs Viktor Postol match-up Martin was clearly advantaged: he had more experienced with 34 KOs, 3 other wins and only 4 losses as opposed to Viktor Postol’s 12 KOs and 16 other wins. Mattysse was also significantly more built than Postol, with Postol being 5 and a half inches taller then Mattysse despite being in the same weight category.

However, Viktor Postol held one advantage over Matthysse: he had four extra inches of reach. Relying on this one factor was a mixed bag for Postol in the beginning matches. Using a rather weak jab his defences required little energy but were ineffective in stopping the more powerful Matthysse. By the third round Postol was keeping Matthysse’s flying left hooks at bay with a more committed jabs, keeping Matthysse at range and forcing him to use more energy in the process. Whenever Matthyse broke his way through Postol was able to grab and control Matthysse and force him to return to out of range positions. Increasing his lateral movements Postol was able to keep Matthysse from getting many clear shots and clean combinations.

Matthysse then decided to storm Postol’s jabing wall during the sixth round. He repeatedly by-passed Postol’s jabs with a leading right hook. By the seventh round he was throwing hook combinations scoring a body shot and a head shot in a row against Postol. However towards the end of the seventh round he came too close to Postol and got a strong right punch to his head just before the round ended. At this point Postol cashed in the energy he was saving. Throwing powerful combinations Postol was able to even spin Matthysse once with his counter jab. Matthsse tryed a left hook which landed him a counter right uppercut and a left counter hook to the eye from Postol. This unexpected attack had damaged his eye and Matthysse decided to end the fight after feeling his eye “pop” when it was struck. With this punch Postol gained the Junior welterweight title.

Despite not having the statistical edge on his opponent Postol used his resources more effectively, creatively, and in unexpected ways that lead to his victory over the now former champion Matthysse. He constructed an illusion of Matthysse dominating him when really he was wearing down his energetic and psychological resources. This fight illustrated the technical proficiency and strategy that Postol has trained to achieve.
