Mauricio Herrera vs Danny Garcia – Most Controversial Fight of 2014

On March 15, 2014  Mauricio Herrera lost a controversial majority decision to Danny García in a 12 round championship bout for the WBC,WBA (Super) & The Ring light welterweight titles, by the scores of 116-112 twice and 114-114.

The decision was highly disputed with many members of the media scoring the bout in favor of Mauricio Herrera, including Showtime Championship Boxing’s broadcasting team.The scorecards submitted by judges Carlos Colon and Alejandro Rochin, in particular, drew criticism as their four point advantage for Garcia were not reflective of the action in the ring.

Throughout the 12 rounds Danny Garcia unable to solve Herrera’s awkwardness, Herrera also landed the most effective punches, Garcia’s nose was bloodied and his face was swollen.

Mauricio Herrera was busier and had nearly a 3-1 edge in jabs landed (hitting on 33%).  Danny Garcia had the egde in power shots (13 of 34 per round), as Herrera landed an avg. of 7 of 23 power shots per round.
